The peak: midsummer to early fall
For most US lakes, the highest cyanobacteria risk runs from roughly July through September, often bleeding into October in a warm year. Blooms can appear earlier and linger later, but that late-summer stretch is when warm water, long days, and accumulated nutrients line up. It is no coincidence that this overlaps peak swimming season, which is why the daily read matters most in exactly these months.
Why blooms peak then
Cyanobacteria are always present in most lakes at low levels. A bloom happens when three ingredients come together, and late summer is when all three usually do:
- Warmth.Cyanobacteria thrive in warm water, generally above about 77 degrees Fahrenheit, and out-compete other algae as the water heats through summer.
- Calm, stable water. Hot, still stretches let the water stratify into layers and let buoyant cyanobacteria float up and concentrate at the surface. Wind and mixing break blooms up, so a run of calm, sunny days is a setup.
- Nutrients. Phosphorus and nitrogen are the fuel, washed in from fertilizer, farm runoff, lawns, and septic systems. Spring and early-summer rains load a lake with nutrients that then feed the summer bloom.
Warm plus calm plus nutrient-rich is the whole recipe, and it is why a bloom can flare within days of a heat wave following a wet spring.
Regional variation
The calendar shifts with climate. The peak months are a national average, not a rule for your lake:
- Warm South and Southwest. In Florida, the Gulf states, and the desert Southwest, the season starts earlier and runs longer, and some warm, nutrient-loaded waters can bloom in nearly any month.
- Northern and mountain lakes. Farther north and at altitude, the window is shorter and later, often concentrated in a few weeks of late summer when the water finally warms enough.
- Nutrient-rich lakes anywhere. A shallow, farm-fed, or development-ringed lake blooms sooner and harder than a deep, clean one at the same latitude. Local nutrient loading often matters more than the map.
A lengthening season
Warmer air and water are stretching the bloom season at both ends, with blooms starting earlier in summer and persisting later into fall than they did a generation ago. Warmer winters and more intense rainfall, which flushes more nutrients into lakes, both push in the same direction. The practical takeaway is not to treat any single month as automatically safe.
